Exploration Topic: Our Community

Essential Question: What is Our Community?

Focus Area: Building

Weekly Focus: Construction  

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

Students will be encouraged to join teacher at the Blocks Area to learn how buildings and houses are constructed. Children will then construct on their own.  

 

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompted questions like what do you see? What else can you find? What about this?

 

Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question, name the colors they picked and the colors they made. 

 

ELL Students: Will be given the directions / questions in Spanish.  Dictation will be written in whichever language they answer

Standard Addressed:

P-LIT 5: Child asks and answers questions about the book what was read. 

Foundational Text for the Week:

Whose Tools? By Toni Buzzeo

• There are so many tools in this book. Which tools do you remember?
• The books talks about lots of different people who use these tools in their jobs. What are some of these jobs?
• What kinds of tools do you use to help you?

Learning Centers Available for the Theme:

Blocks- Children are encouraged to explore the block center. They will be shown a few unit blocks, shown where they can be found in the classroom, and shown how to match them to their outline in order to clean up. 

Dramatic Play- Children are invited to explore the dramatic play area and use the props and clothing provided. Dramatic Play will be set up as a kitchen.  Teacher will introduce basic materials, how to use them, and how to put them away. 

Art- Children are invited to explore the art area. They will be shown a paint container, brush and paper. Teacher will model how to dip brush in paint and paint a few brushstrokes on paper. Students will be shown where materials can be found in the classroom and what they should do when they finish painting. 

Science- Children will be shown a few items from a collection of natural objects. Teacher will model how students can begin to explore some of the materials. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom and how to put them away when finished. 

Math- Children will be shown a couple of puzzles. Teacher will model how to take apart and how to put a few pieces together. Students will be shown where puzzles can be found and how to put them away. 

Library- Students are able to explore books from the classroom library. 

Writing-  Students are invited to explore the materials provided in the writing center. They are encouraged to explore their name cards. 

Sensory- Students will be shown a small amount of sand and a few toys. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom.  Students will be prompted to wash their hands before and after using the sand table.

Weekly Focus: Express and Test Ideas 

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

Students will be encouraged to join teacher at the sand table, using magnified glasses children will be asked to find seashell and investigate details about them. 

Children will then be asked to draw some of the details they found. 

 

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompted questions like what do you see? What else can you find? What about this?

 

Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question, name the colors they picked and the colors they made. 

 

ELL Students: Will be given the directions / questions in Spanish.  Dictation will be written in whichever language they answer

Goal P- SCI 1. Child observes and describes observable phenomena (objects, materials, organisms and events).

Foundational Text for the Week:

Step Gently Out by Helen Frost

•  What do you see? What do you notice about this cricket?

Students will be encouraged to join teacher at different centers and look closely at materials and what can be done with them. example play-doh what can we make? what happens when we leave play-doh out of the cup with the lid on?

• There are so many colors in this book. What are some of the colors the girl in this book sees in her life?
• I remember the child talking about blue sneakers. What color are your shoes? Find someone else in our room who has the same color shoes as you.
• The child also notices purple clouds in the sky. Have you ever seen purple clouds? What other colors can clouds be?

• There are lots of animals in this book such as birds, insects, fish and reptiles. Animals can all look very different and have some things that are similar, or even the same. Let’s look at the first page. What makes the tiger and the zebra similar?
• Let’s turn the page. What makes the tiger and the dog similar?
• What are some things that make you the same as your friends in 3-K? What are some things that make you different?
