REMINDERS!

  • Please make sure your child walks into the school building with a mask on already. 
  • Please make sure your child has two extra change of clothes, including underwear, tops bottoms and socks.

Exploration 2: Our Environment

Essential Question: What can we discover about community?

Focus Area: Building 

Weekly Focus: Noticing Buildings

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

Teacher will provide the children with various pictures of buildings and structures at different centers. Children will have a chance to investigate what they notice about the buildings. teachers will then sit with them and discuss it. 

 

Standard Addressed:

Goal: SCI: 1- 6 Children will be working with teacher discussing, predicting and testing to come  to a conclusion.

 

Foundational Text for the Week:


All the Buildings in New York City That I have Drawn BY James Gulliver Hancock


Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:



This book is about buildings where we live – New York City. Are there any buildings in here that you have seen before?

The Flat Iron building is different than most other buildings. Let’s look together and see what makes if different. What do you notice?

Some of the buildings had pictures on them. Let’s look at this one with the noodles. What do you think might be inside this building?

 

Learning Centers Available for the Theme:

Blocks- Children are encouraged to use explore the block center. They will be shown a few unit blocks, shown where they can be found in the classroom, and shown how to match them to their outline in order to clean up.

 

Dramatic Play- Children are invited to explore the dramatic play area and use the props provided. Dramatic Play will be set up as a kitchen.  Teacher will introduce basic materials, how to use them, and how to put them away.

 

Art- Children are invited to explore the art area. They will be shown a paint container, brush and paper. Teacher will model how to dip brush in paint and paint a few brushstrokes on paper. Students will be shown where materials can be found in the classroom and what they should do when they finish painting.

 

Science- Children will be shown a few items from a collection of natural objects. Teacher will model how students can begin to explore some of the materials. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom and how to put them away when finished.

 

Math- Children will be shown a couple of puzzles. Teacher will model how to take apart and how to put a few pieces together. Students will be shown where puzzles can be found and how to put them away.

 

Library- Students are able to explore books from the classroom library.

 

Writing- Students are invited to explore the materials provided in the writing center. They are encouraged to explore their name cards.  

 

Sensory- Students will be shown a small amount of sand and a few toys. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom.

Teacher will work with children at the light table. children will be asked to construct using magna-tiles.

Teacher will work with children in small groups to test what happens when certain ingredients are mixed together. children will be making slime 

 

Standard Addressed:

Goal: SCI: 1- 6 Children will be working with teacher discussing, predicting and testing to come  to a conclusion.

 

Foundational Text for the Week:


Red is a Dragon: a Book of colors By Roseanne Greenfield Thong 


Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:



There are so many colors in this book. What are some of the colors the girl in this book sees in her life?

I remember the child talking about blue sneakers. What color are your shoes? Find someone else in our room who has the same color shoes as you.

The child also notices purple clouds in the sky. Have you ever seen purple clouds? What other colors can clouds be?

Teacher will work with children in small groups at the sconce area. Children will use magnify glasses to investigate insects. 

 

Standard Addressed:

Goal P-ATL.3 Child appropriately handles and takes care of classroom materials.

Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:


There are lots of animals in this book such as birds, insects, fish and reptiles. Animals can all look very different and have some things that are similar, or even the same. Let’s look at the first page. What makes the tiger and the zebra similar? 


Let’s turn the page. What makes the tiger and the dog similar? 


What are some things that make you the same as your friends in 3-K? What are some things that make you different?
